Better known as Megan's Law, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was enacted by congress in 1995.
The legislation originates from an unfortunate incident in New Jersey where which young Megan Kanka was kidnapped,
raped, and brutally murdered by a repeat violent sex offender, Jesse Timmendequas, who had relocated into the Kanka
family's neighborhood, immediately accross the street.
It was later determined, that had Megan's family know of the risk that existed, this crime could and would have
been prevented. After years of fine tuning the language in the legislation, Megan's Law was enacted to prevent
